A golden palanquin made at a cost of over Rs 1.25 crore is being sent from Punjab to the birthplace of Guru Ravidass in Varanasi on the occasion of his 631st birth anniversary.
A procession carrying this palanquin, prepared through contributions from Dalit NRIs, has started from Dera Sachkhand Ballan in Jalandhar. Led by Sant Niranjan Dass, head of the Dera, the procession, having around 250 vehicles, is scheduled to reach Varanasi on February 21, 2008 and will reportedly be welcomed by Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati.
While those privy to the particulars of the 10-foot-high and 5-foot-wide palanquin admitted that the total expenditure incurred over it was Rs 1.25 crore, they did not divulge the quantity of gold used in it.
