A 162-gram egg laid by a Lohman-breed hen has drawn lot of attention from curious people even as a poultry expert said it is an unusual phenomenon and such eggs are not fit for consumption.
The 10-month-old hen, weighing 1.25 kg, has been laying eggs for the past four months but the one that she laid on Thursday visibly surprised Surinder Kumar Joshi, the poultry farm owner.
"It was a pleasant surprise when we saw the egg. The same hen like other hens of her breed and most others normally lay eggs weighing between 50 and 60 gram," Joshi said.
Joshi, who has 28,000 birds at his two-acre farm in Punjab's Derabassi, about 25 km from here, said another hen at his farm had laid an egg weighing 132 gram last year.
Meanwhile, Jagjit Singh, a professor of Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, who has done his doctorate in poultry pathology, said "It is unusual to have such an egg. Though I have heard of cases where eggs weighed between 80 and 100 gram, but this particular egg is different."
Explaining the reason, Singh said, "Sometimes the passage of the egg gets blocked but the yoke and albumin keep on collecting inside and the shell also grows in size."
He said such eggs are not fit for consumption.
People are also thronging the farm to have look at the unusual egg.
