In spite of a 10-month-long drive undertaken by the Traffic Police against drunken driving in Mumbai, the number of persons arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol has not gone down.
The number of people held for driving under the influence of alcohol in the last two months is nearly half the cumulative figure for the whole of 2007. However, traffic police authorities are not discouraged and said they will continue with the drive in order to make the city streets safer.
Since January this year, nearly 1,300 drivers held under the drunken driving have had their driving license suspended. Around 922 drunken drivers have been sent to jail by motor vehicle courts.
