Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide attack that also killed at least 20 others at a campaign rally, aides said. “The surgeons confirmed that she has been martyred,” Bhutto’s lawyer Babar Awan said. Pakistan on Wednesday said it was opposed to the introduction to South Asia of new weapon systems like India's proposed missile defence shield as they could spark an "unnecessary" arms race.
Asked about India's recent missile tests in preparation for putting in place a missile defence system, Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Sadiq told a briefing: "Pakistan is not in favour of the introduction of new weapon systems by any party as this could lead to an unnecessary armaments race."
