Queen to honour Bhangra singer Malkit Singh

BHANGRA singer Malkit Singh will become the first Punjabi singer to be honoured with an MBE.
Singh is the first bhangra artist to make it into the Queen's Honours List, which is published twice every year to honour people with a record of distinguished and long-standing service to the nation or the community.
He told the Hindustan Times he wasn't sure how to greet the Queen when he collects his medal.
He said: "I have no idea what I will say to her... maybe chak de phatte or balley balley."
Singh, born in Husseinpur village of Jalandhar district, came to Britain in 1984 from Punjab and cut his first album two years later - it became a trailblazer as bhangra grew in popularity in dance halls and nightclubs all over Britain.
He is most famous for the songs 'Gur Nalo Ishq Mita,' 'Tootak Tootak Tootiyan', 'Kurri Garam Jayee', as well as recent numbers, 'Chal Hun' and 'Jind Mahi' which features in the blockbuster 'Bend it Like Beckham' soundtrack.
His other accolades include being given the Recognition of the city of Los Angeles for his service to the Indian community in 1997, he was listed in the 2000 Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest selling bhangra artist of all time and is known as the unofficial "king" of bhangra and Punjabi folk music.
He added: "I worked very hard on my music. And although I had won medals in India when I was in college, my musical journey actually began in Britain."
