Did anyone say recession? Not for our item girls who are set to rake it in big on New Year's eve. On the day Citigroup announced 52,000 job cuts it emerged that Bipasha Basu will be making Rs 1.5 crore for her star turn at Sahara Star on 31st night. Her competitor on the Bollywood sweepstakes Katrina Kaif  has been offered Rs 1 crore by JW Marriott for a few hours of dancing.

So corporate India may grimly go about trimming jobs, and newspapers may be full of doomsday scenarios but there are enough people who'll shell out big bucks to end the year dancing with the starlets. If anything the item craze seems to be spreading beyond India. Fizzle-proof Malaika Arora will be at a Singapore hotel and Rakhi Sawant is driving a hard bargain with the promoters of a cruise ship in Bangkok and a five-star hotel in Dubai. "I've asked for Rs 50 lakh but they are offering 40."

The going is so good that even actresses like Ameesha Patel and Neha Dhupia, not particularly renowned for their dancing skills, have jumped into the arena and are charging Rs 25 lakh apiece. Is this what they call Distress Fun Managers?
