KOLKATA:
A domestic help molested a 25-year-old PhD student at Salt Lake's AE Block on
Tuesday evening. The girl fought back and chased the man back to his employer's
house, where she was reportedly slapped. Though the accused was arrested after a
complaint, he walked free on bail on Wednesday.
Kanu Yadav, the 20-year-old
domestic, pounced on the girl as she and her sister were heading for a friend's
place in AE Block around 8 pm. When the girl fought back and started screaming,
Yadav let her go and bolted. The girl gave chase. With the girl hot on his
heels, Yadav threw a stone at her. But she did not give up the chase and caught
up with him at his employer's
home.
As the girl barged into
the house, she was confronted by Yadav's employer Sarita Agarwal and her sister,
who tried to shield him. An altercation ensued and the Agarwals reportedly
slapped the girl for "false allegations" against Yadav, who had come from Bihar
to work for them.
Undeterred,
the victim lodged a complaint against Yadav and FIRs against the women. This led
to Yadav's arrest. Agarwal's relatives, however, denied the girl was slapped.
Yadav walked out on bail after he was produced in the Bidhannagar additional
CJM's court.
The incident
highlights the lack of safety for women in the township after dark. "Police
should ensure we can move around the township freely," said a
resident.
