Your funda is clear. If you have all the nutrients available in your refrigerator, you are likely to benefit from them more often. So, you set out on your weekly drive and make sure you pick up more than enough quota of carrots, apples and other vegetables. However, that's a major mistake.
The nutrition value of your veggies and fruits starts decreasing the moment they are harvested from the fields. Hence, the longer you store them, the lesser will be their nutrition count. If you buy your fruits now, dump them in the fridge and end up consuming them only a week or two later, the health benefits are very suspect.
The mantra is to pick up small stocks as per your requirements and consume them fresh. Also, stay clear of frozen veggies that are often packed using syrups. They can easily add up to the undesired calorie count.
MISTAKE #2
See-through containers
Most of the fancy containers that you get in the market have a transparent lid or sometimes even a see-through body. Stay clear of storing rice, cereals and especially milk in such containers. Such foods are rich in their vitamin value.
When exposed to light, a slow chemical reaction takes place that decreases their vitamin content. If you are using low-fat variety of milk, the decrease will be even faster because this milk variety is comparatively a lot thinner. To avoid this, store such foods in opaque containers.
MISTAKE #3
Cooking garlic quickly
If you cook garlic the right way, it can go a long way in benefiting your health. Research has shown that if chopped garlic pieces are kept aside for ten minutes before cooking, a chemical reaction takes place. As a result, various compounds are released that have many health benefits.
MISTAKE #4
You miss out on seasonings
Make sure your diet is rich in herbs and spices. Spices not only add flavour to your food but are also high in their antioxidant value and hence, have higher potency to fight bacteria. So, the next time you indulge in any delicacy, don't leave the cinnamon and oregano aside.
MISTAKE #5
You peel the nutrients off
After much coaxing from your mother, you finally agree and go the 'An apple a day' route. However, you make sure the apple is peeled off completely and that you have only the pulp. However, that's a major mistake. Studies have shown that most fruit peels in fact, rank much higher on the antioxidant scale as compared to the rest of the fruit. So, when you peel off, you actually throw away major fiber and nutrition. So the next time, make sure you have your apples and peaches whole.
